Underwater portraits, boudoir goes beyond the bedroom

Who says boudoir should be lingerie photos in a bedroom? I certainly think that there is a lot more to a powerful woman than that! So I love that I’m able to take my outdoor boudoir to a new level with underwater portraits. I’ve always loved water, as a kid I had really bad ear infections and couldn’t get my head wet – hair washing was tricky and swimming was mostly off limits. So I never learned the right way to swim. But water and the ocean always had a special appeal to me. So in my early twenties my friend convinced me we should jump off a boat into the lake. Miracles happen folks, my ears were fine! That Summer I spent so much time in the lake and since then being in water has become one of my happy places – even though I still swim funny. So now being able to combine water and empowering portraiture is so exciting for me!

Creating images that are unique isn’t always easy

Elexia and I had planned this shoot for weeks. Everything seemed to be in order, including the heated indoor pool we would be shooting in. Except when the day finally came it was miserably cold out. And, to our surprise the indoor pool had been closed for unscheduled repairs. So now what? There is an outdoor pool, but it’s also only around 50 degrees out. But, the pool is heated (somewhat) and we’re all here. So we decided to go for it. I’m happy that we did, even though it led to me getting a cold.

Underwater portraits are so much fun and are so beautiful. But they are not easy! Posing underwater is tricky. Especially since I can’t direct the same way I would normally. So I really only recommend it if water is your zone. However the effort is always worth the results!

“Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it”

There is something about water that speaks to me emotionally. Water is sacred. It brings life but can also take it away. When you connect with water there is something primal and pure happening. Which is why I feel like underwater portraits are so powerful, bold, and inspiring. And I loved this quote, because it also made me think of love, and feminine energy.

I hope you feel inspired by these underwater portraits!
