Recently I photographed around the Grand Lake neighborhood in Oakland Dancer Lee AlexMeyer-Lorey at night. Dance is such a fascinating art form and lends itself to so many creative photo ideas.
What lead to the Oakland Dancer at night photoshoot?
Initially the plan was to shoot during the late afternoon and to catch the magical golden hour. However thanks to Bay Area traffic, makeup artist Juanita got stuck, and the shoot got later, and later. As I watched the last of the light disappear out of my studio window I was coming up with my plan B. As a photographer I often run into situations where things don’t go as planned, especially photographing life events like weddings. So I’m already used to needing to be flexible and creative in all situations. Luckily my studio is in a super cool neighborhood, Grand Lake, Oakland. So we headed out into the night to find light and make magic happen.
Locations we used…
The first place we went to get the photoshoot started was at the pillars at Lake Merritt. We then made our way back towards the Grand Lake Theatre, stopping under the highway overpass to take a few dance photos with the blue and multi colored lights. The Grand Lake Theatre entrance turned out to be my favorite spot. The performance aspect of dance went perfectly with the atmosphere of the historic theatre.
Here are my favorite images from the photoshoot! I hope you enjoy the images!
I was thoroughly impressed by Lee Alex’s ability to dance and jump in those heels!
